Tree Diagram

7.SP.C.8

Definition

A diagram showing all possible outcomes of a multi-step probability experiment using branches. The total outcomes equal the product of the choices at each step.

Examples

  • Flipping a coin twice: 2 × 2 = 4 outcomes (HH, HT, TH, TT).
  • Flip a coin then roll a die: 2 × 6 = 12 total outcomes.

Key rule

Multiply the branches at each level to find the total number of outcomes.

Memory hook

Branch out each step, then count the paths.
