Theoretical Probability

7.SP.C.6

Definition

Calculated using the ratio of favorable outcomes to total equally likely outcomes. Predicts what should happen based on mathematical reasoning, without running an experiment.

Examples

  • A bag with 4 blue and 6 red marbles: P(blue) = 4/10 = 40%.
  • With more trials, experimental results approach the theoretical probability.

Key rule

Theoretical probability assumes outcomes are equally likely.

Memory hook

What should happen, based on the math alone.
