Slope-Intercept Form

Algebra 1 · Linear Functions

Definition

Slope-intercept form is the linear equation y = mx + b, where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept.

Examples

  • y = 2x + 3 has slope 2 and y-intercept 3.
  • y = -x + 5 has slope -1 and y-intercept 5.

Key rule

Read the slope and y-intercept straight off the equation.

Memory hook

y = mx + b: m is the slope, b is where it starts.
