Scaling

5.NF.B.5

Definition

Resizing a number by multiplying; factors above 1 enlarge, factors below 1 reduce.

Examples

  • 6 x 2 = 12 — multiplying by more than 1 grows the number.
  • 6 x 1/2 = 3 — multiplying by less than 1 shrinks the number.

Key rule

Multiplying by more than 1 makes a number bigger; multiplying by less than 1 makes it smaller.

Memory hook

Bigger factor grows it, smaller factor shrinks it.
