Scale

7.G.A.1

Definition

A ratio comparing the dimensions of a drawing to the actual dimensions of the object. Used in maps, blueprints, and models. Written as 1:n or '1 unit = n units.'

Examples

  • Map scale 1 cm = 5 miles: 3 cm on the map = 15 miles in reality.
  • Blueprint scale 1 inch = 8 feet: 4 inches on paper = 32 feet in the actual room.

Key rule

Map distance × scale = actual distance.

Memory hook

One unit on paper stands for many units in real life.
