Definition

A subset of the population selected for study. Used to make inferences about the population when studying everyone is impractical. Quality depends on size and selection method.

Examples

  • 600 students total; a sample of 60 students is 10% of the population.
  • 45 of 60 sampled (75%) prefer lunch period A → estimate 75% of 600 = 450 students overall.

Key rule

A good sample is random and representative of the population.
