Open Circle

7.EE.B.4b

Definition

Placed at the boundary value of an inequality that uses < or >. The boundary point is NOT included in the solution set.

Examples

  • x > 4 — 4 is the boundary but solutions start just above it.
  • x < -1 — -1 is NOT included.

Key rule

Does the inequality have an equals bar? No means open circle.

Memory hook

Open circle = the boundary doesn't count.
