6.SP.A.3

Definition

The average of a data set, found by adding all values and dividing by the number of values.

Examples

  • 2+4+5+6+8 = 25, and 25 ÷ 5 = 5. The mean is 5.
  • The mean 'evens out' the data into a fair share.

Key rule

Mean = sum of values ÷ number of values.

Memory hook

Add them all up, divide by how many.
