Function Notation
Algebra 1 · Functions & Sequences
Definition
Function notation is a way of writing functions as f(x), where f(x) is the output value for a given input x.
Examples
- f(x) = 3x means f(2) = 6.
- h(x) = x - 1 means h(5) = 4.
Key rule
f(x) does not mean f times x; it names the output.
Memory hook
f(x) reads "f of x" - the output at input x.
