Estimation

7.EE.B.3

Definition

Finding an approximate answer by rounding or simplifying numbers. Use ≈ (approximately equal to). Helps check if an exact answer is reasonable.

Examples

  • 48 × 19 ≈ 50 × 20 = 1,000; exact answer 912 is close.
  • 362 + 489 ≈ 300 + 400 = 700 (front-end estimation).

Key rule

A good estimate is close to the exact answer but simpler to calculate.

Memory hook

Round first, then sanity-check the exact answer.
