Estimate
7.SP.A.2
Definition
A prediction of a population value based on sample data. Calculated by applying the sample statistic to the population size. Larger, random samples produce more accurate estimates.
Examples
- 40 of 50 surveyed prefer pizza (80%); estimate for 600 students = 0.80 × 600 = 480.
- Sample average height 64 in estimates the population average as about 64 in.
Key rule
A larger, representative sample gives a more accurate estimate.
Memory hook
Use the sample percentage to predict the whole group.
