Definition

A mathematical statement that two expressions are equal, shown with an equals sign. The goal is usually to find the value of the variable that makes it true.

Examples

  • 2x + 3 = 11 is an equation.
  • 2x + 3 (no equals sign) is only an expression, not an equation.

Key rule

Whatever you do to one side, you must do to the other to keep it balanced.
