Constant

7.EE.A.1

Definition

A term in an expression that contains only a number, no variable. Its value stays the same regardless of the variable's value.

Examples

  • In 2x + 5, the constant is 5.
  • In -3x² + 7x - 4, the constant is -4.

Key rule

Constants include negative numbers too — in 3x - 8, the constant is -8, not 8.

Memory hook

No variable attached, value never changes.
