Definition
The numerical factor in a term that is multiplied by the variable(s).
Examples
- In 7x, the coefficient is 7.
- In x, the coefficient is 1 (understood); in -x, the coefficient is -1.
Key rule
Coefficient tells you how many of that variable term you have.

7x means 7 of the x's.
