Algebra 1 · Inequalities

Definition

An absolute value inequality is an inequality with an absolute value that becomes a compound (AND/OR) inequality.

Examples

  • |x| < 3 becomes -3 < x < 3.
  • |x| > 4 becomes x < -4 or x > 4.

Key rule

Less-than makes an AND; greater-than makes an OR.

Memory hook

Less-thAND, greatOR - the < joins, the > splits.
